PhD Position in Bird Ecology at Laboratory of Ornithology in Czech Republic

Laboratory of Ornithology in OlomoucLaboratory of Ornithology in Olomouc, Czech Republic is inviting applications for PhD position in Bird Ecology. To be eligible for this position, applicants must have an MSc in Biology with a specialization in Animal Ecology, Zoology or Genetics and proficient knowledge of English. The position requires residence in Olomouc and must result in PhD thesis within the 4-year contract period. Successful students will get 10000 CZK gross plus additional 7000 CZK of scholarship (tax free).

Scholarship Description: Laboratory of Ornithology in Olomouc seeks one PhD student to join a team working on two grant projects: (1) Post-copulatory sexual selection and the biology of sperm, (2) Long-term monitoring of highly philopatric songbird population with known pedigree. Collared flycatcher is the study species in both these projects. In the first project we will test relationships between ornament size, sperm quality, and paternity. In the second project we will gather basic breeding biology data (laying date, clutch size, egg size, parental feeding rate etc.), conduct cross-fostering experiments and fit animal models to decompose phenotypic variances in offspring and parental traits to their causal components. The major part of the position will lie in data analysis and work on scientific papers.

Duration of award(s): The successful candidate will first be offered a temporary position for one year with the option of renewal for another three years. Extension of the contract depends on sufficient progress in the first year to indicate that a successful completion of the PhD thesis within the next three years is to be expected.
