PhD Studentship on Water Freezing at Nanoscale in Spain

Catalan Institute of Nanotechnology NanocienciaThe Catalan Institute of Nanotechnology Nanociencia which is jointly funded by Catalan Government, the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) is inviting applications for one PhD studentship. This studentship is offered to work in the area of molecular structure of water at interfaces and wetting at the nanometer scale. Studentship is awarded for one year extensible up to a maximum of 4 years starting in autumn 2013.

Study Subject(s): The candidate will work in the area of molecular structure of water at interfaces and wetting at the nanometer scale.
Course Level: This studentship is offered for pursuing PhD programme at UAB Campus.
Scholarship Provider: The Catalan Institute of Nanotechnology Nanociencia (The Catalan Institute of Nanotechnology Nanociencia is a non-profit research institute, jointly funded by Catalan Government, the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC).
Scholarship can be taken at: Spain

Eligibility: Applicants should have completed a degree in Physics or Chemistry with an academic grade point average of 2.5 or higher, and we will value positively a Master’s degree in any complementary discipline such as Materials Science, Biophysics, or Nanotechnology. The successful candidate must have an enquiring mind, enjoy problem-solving and be able to think independently while at the same time working in a group –a confident and outgoing personality will help. A good command of English, both in writing and in oral presentations, is essential.

Scholarship Description: The Institut Català de Nanociencia i Nanotecnologia (http://www.icn.cat) is a non-profit research institute, jointly funded by Catalan Government, the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), and the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas (CSIC). ICN’s focus is excellence in research on nanoscience and nanotechnology. ICN2 has just moved to a new building equipped with state of the art facilities. The successful candidate will join the Water on Surfaces research line led by Dr. Albert Verdaguer at the Force Probe microscopy and Surface Nanoengineering (FPM&SN)) group led by Dr. Jordi Fraxedas. The group specializes on surface nanoenginering to control interaction of molecules with surfaces and the development of atomic force microscopy techniques. We currently have research projects on controlling water freezing at the nanoscale, hydrophobic self assembled monolayer coatings, development of Atomic Force Microscopy dynamic techniques and mechanical properties of materials at the nanoscale.

Number of award(s): One studentship is offered.
