Tu Horomata Scholarships for Postgraduate Students in New Zealand

Victoria University of WellingtonVictoria University of Wellington offers Tu Horomata Scholarships for postgraduate students in New Zealand. The purpose of the scholarships is to increase retention and completion rates of Maori at Master’s level. These scholarships are part of the Maori and Pacific Peoples Special Supplementary Grant. Ten scholarships are offered for one year. This fund scholarship is designed to encourage current Victoria University students to continue on to postgraduate study, therefore, students must be enrolled at Victoria University of Wellington in the year of application.


Study Subject(s): Scholarships are provided in area where Maori are under represented Victoria University of Wellington at postgraduate degree level.
Course Level: The scholarships are available for pursuing postgraduate degree level at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand.
Scholarship Provider: Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand.
Scholarship can be taken at: New Zealand.


Eligibility: -students with high academic potential

-be a New Zealand citizen

-students must be enrolled at Victoria University of Wellington in the year of application

-It is also preferred that students are targeted who would otherwise not be able to continue on to postgraduate study.


Scholarship Open for International Students: The students of New Zealand can apply for this scholarship (current Victoria University students)


Scholarship Description: Targeted Maori scholarships are available for full-time study at postgraduate level for students with high academic potential. These scholarships are known as Tu Horomata Scholarships (Horomata means pure or excellent). Victoria intends to use part of the Maori and Pacific Peoples Special Supplementary Grant and additional funding allocated by the PVC(Maori)to help retain and up skill Maori students at masters level by setting up these scholarships


Number of award(s): Ten scholarships are offered.


Duration of award(s): Scholarships are offered for one year.


What does it cover? Scholarships offer $12,500 for Masters by thesis, Up to $5,000 for Honours and Up to $5,000 for Masters by coursework.


Selection criteria: Selection for all Tu Horomata scholarships will be based on:

-the student’s academic record

- support for the intended research within the School/Faculty in the form of a reference statement

-the relevance of the intended research project to the interests of Maori and/or

- whether the research is in area where Maori are underrepresented

- the agreement of Toihuarewa
