The School of Linguistics and English Language at Bangor University is pleased to offer a fully funded studentship for a PhD study in bilingualism, starting in September 2013, on a project entitled: “Is ‘reversed diglossia’ coming to Wales? Investigating the linguistic habits of adolescents in Wales and beyond.” Candidates should have a First Class Honours or a good 2.1 degree in Linguistics, have completed or be about to complete a Master’s in Bilingualism, Linguistics, or a related field with a particular focus on Welsh-English bilingualism, and have a conversational knowledge of Welsh. Scholarship Description: The aim of the project is to investigate the attitudes of Welsh-speaking adolescents towards the use of Welsh in informal domains, and to compare these with other cases of regional/minority languages in Europe. Moreover, the project will involve the identification of activities that may be employed in order to facilitate the use of Welsh in informal domains. The PhD studentship will be associated to a larger research programme on the study of regional and minority languages across Europe concerning issues of language maintenance, language rights, and the reversal of language shift developed by researchers at Bangor University.

What does it cover? Each holder of a PhD studentship receives an annual maintenance grant of £13,726 (for 2013/14). For the following two years (2014/15; 2015/16) the stipend will reflect Research Councils UK guidance. PhD studentship holders also receive an annual research allowance of up to £1,500 (for approved expenditure). Studentship holders do not pay fees. No additional allowances are payable. Successful studentship applicants will be expected to supply around 100 hours per year of teaching/research assistance focused on a supervisor / research team as part of their development as an academic of the future.
