Health Professional Scholarships for PhD Students in Australia

Heart Foundation in AustraliaHeart Foundation is offering health professional scholarships for PhD students in Australia. The PhD may be in any area of cardiovascular research, including clinical, biomedical, public health and health services research. Scholarships provide stipend only for 3 years subject to annual review. The stipend for scholars commencing in 2014 will be $40,000 p.a. (pro-rata). The award provides the opportunity for applicants to return to the main PhD stream after a number of non-academic years and apply to other PhD scholarship schemes for funding. The application deadline is 28th June 2013.

Eligibility: Any health delivery professionals (including allied health professionals and health service managers) who wish to conduct a PhD in cardiovascular health research (must continue clinical engagement at a minimum of 0.2 FTE).


Scholarship Open for International Students: The students of Australia can apply for these scholarships.


Scholarship Description:  Heart Foundation research scholarships complement other PhD funding sources by strategically providing support for the development of cardiovascular research capacity in under-represented areas of expertise.  The Health Professional Scholarship encourages health professionals to undertake a PhD in an area of cardiovascular research and actively apply evidence-based practice in order to develop the skills required to translate and implement research evidence into practice. It will also help them become more competitive for subsequent PhD awards. The award provides the opportunity for applicants to return to the main PhD stream after a number of non-academic years and apply to other PhD scholarship schemes for funding.


Number of award(s):  The Committee will be made up of six to nine eminent cardiovascular researchers with broad research experience and broad health practice backgrounds.


 Duration of award(s): Scholarship is offered for 3 years subject to annual review.


What does it cover? Stipend of up to $40,000 pro rata per annum.


Selection Criteria: The Committee will be responsible for assessing relevance to cardiovascular health, relevance to the stated purpose of the award, track record/work history of the applicant and quality and feasibility of the research proposal. The Heart Foundation Research Program will review applications for completeness and adherence to funding rules. Applications that are incomplete or do not conform to the funding rules will not be considered further.


 Notification: Applicants will usually be notified of the outcome of their application in late November and successful applicants will be provided with administrative details for their funding.
