The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the Lead Supervisor, Dr Lowri Ann Rees (Lecturer in Modern History), and in close contact with the supervisor team, Professor Huw Pryce (Professor of Welsh History) and Dr Peter Shapely (Senior Lecturer in Modern History). Scholarship Description: This doctoral project will explore the as yet uncatalogued Penrhyn Castle papers housed at the Bangor University Archives. The thesis will focus on, but not be limited to, the documents in this collection and will include an element of cataloguing. The student will explore the development of the Penrhyn estate under the Pennant family during the late eighteenth century and into the nineteenth century. The aim of the project is to fill a gap in scholarship to date, by addressing issues relating to the management of the estate, and its wider social, economic, cultural and political impact. The successful candidate will be expected to explore themes and topics such as land management, the role of female landlords, the Penrhyn Quarry lock-out and strike, and issues of language and identity in relation to the current historiography and debates.

What does it cover? Each holder of a PhD studentship receives an annual maintenance grant of £13,726 (for 2013/14). For the following two years (2014/15; 2015/16) the stipend will reflect Research Councils UK guidance. PhD studentship holders also receive an annual research allowance of up to £1,500 (for approved expenditure). Studentship holders do not pay fees. No additional allowances are payable. Successful studentship applicants will be expected to supply around 100 hours per year of teaching/research assistance focused on a supervisor / research team as part of their development as an academic of the future.
