Eligibility: -Applications are invited from qualified veterinarians for this post-graduate training programme rotating through a large range of small animal disciplines, including Internal Medicine, Soft Tissue Surgery, Orthopaedics, Oncology, Diagnostic Imaging, Anaesthesia, Neurology and Clinical Pathology.
-Experience in small animal practice preferred, but new graduates may be considered. -The programme is designed to provide a broad but intensive learning experience in various areas of small animal medicine.
-It will help to prepare individuals for Senior Clinical Training Programmes, but graduates seeking advanced training and experience prior to beginning practice will also benefit.
-A candidate must be a Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.

Scholarship Description: The programme will start with a short induction period to explain details of Hospital clinical working practice, and policy regarding when to seek assistance and from whom, etc. During the period of the Junior Scholarship, the JCTS will receive training in each specialist area and provide support for the senior clinical members of staff. The JCTS will have primary case responsibility for first opinion cases. Responsibility for second opinion cases will be shared with senior clinical training scholars or senior clinical members of staff. As far as possible the JCTS case responsibility (under supervision of the appropriate clinician) will extend from first consultation at the Hospital through all diagnostic procedures, including post mortem and pathological examination where relevant.
Critical care is under the overall supervision of the anaesthetic group, led by Dr Jackie Brearley, but critical care plans for each patient will be devised by liaison between the anaesthetists and the relevant clinical specialist. The JCTS will be expected to actively participate in twice daily ward rounds; to take part in weekly journal clubs, in the appropriate disciplines, to attend formal seminars in diagnostic imaging, internal medicine and oncology that take place every two weeks during term times and to attend regularly scheduled lectures. Each JCTS is encouraged to take up a small research project during their programme, with the aim of preparing a manuscript for publication in a refereed journal. The manuscript will not be a requirement for completion of the programme and no dedicated time is scheduled for it, but it is considered to be of value and is thus encouraged. At the end, each JCTS will give a presentation to the staff of the Department on a case, or a case series, that has attracted their special interest. A certificate is awarded upon successful completion of the program.

What does it cover?
-Junior Clinical Training Scholarship Scholarship award: £ 14,000 per annum (pro rata)
-The JCTS may attend one major regional or national veterinary meeting as part of the elective time during the year at the JCTS’s own expense. Scheduling must be approved by the Director of the JCTS Programme. The JCTS is entitled to 4 weeks annual holiday. The annual holiday is expected to be taken during term time in accordance with the actual needs of the Hospital Holiday entitlement Not more than 20 days’ holiday, plus Bank Holidays (making a total of 28 days’ holiday in all), may be taken over the duration of the Junior Scholarship.
-On a Bank Holiday, clinical and out-of-hours duties will be undertaken on a rota basis, and in this case it will be possible to take a day’s holiday on an alternative date. Holidays should be agreed with the Director of the JCTS programme and will be taken on a rota basis with the other Junior Clinical Training Scholars to ensure that each Junior Scholar is able to take part in the planned rotations. In the event that the Junior Scholarship ends early, holiday will be on a pro rata basis.
-Accommodation On-site accommodation is offered to all Junior Scholars as part of the Scholarship agreement in order that they may better undertake the training provided in the Scholarship training programme. In the event that a Junior Scholar does not wish to take up the offer of on-site accommodation, s/he will be required to reside within 10 minutes’ traveling time of the Department site. Please note that the keeping of pets is only exceptionally permitted in the Junior Scholar accommodation provided by the Department.
Selection Criteria: The following are essential:
• Membership of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons
• Experience of working, and willingness to work, as part of a team
• Willingness to seek, and to accept, guidance and supervision from all Hospital staff involved with clinical work
• Ability and willingness to provide guidance and supervision to students
• Proven ability to work across the species, and experience of handling all species
• Ability to cope with out of hours emergency working
• Willingness to complete the JCTS training programme
• Proven attention to detail
• A good understanding of the professional context of veterinary medicine
• For applicants for whom English is not their first language, a score of 7.5 in IELTS (with no element under 7), or a score of 100 in TOEFL (with no element less than 24 – internet based test)* The following is preferred:
• At least one year’s experience of veterinary work in the UK.
